The systems that stand still are the ones that fall behind

By Neil Howes

Most airport parking software is designed for a version of the operation that no longer exists.

That’s the problem.

Because airports don’t stand still. And neither do the pressures around them.

Passenger numbers shift, peak times move and processes evolve. What worked six months ago needs refining. But the system underneath often stays exactly the same.

Configured once, then left alone. Set and forget.

The gap no one talks about

Spend time inside a live operation, and you see it straight away.

We were at Bristol Airport recently, where our partnership has just been extended for another five years. What stood out first was the scale of their operation. Thousands of customers moving through every day, checking in, dropping keys and heading to the terminal.

But that’s not the interesting part.

It’s the mindset.

A team that’s open to change – to doing things differently, to being challenged. That’s rare at this scale. And it matters more than any feature set.

Because no operation stays exactly the same. And the best platforms are built to evolve alongside them.

So the real question isn’t: does your tech work today?
It’s: will it still work as things evolve?

What happens when systems evolve with you

Five years ago, ParkIt was introduced at Bristol’s Silverzone car park to support a specific operational need. Today, it underpins the full journey from check-in through to key collection.

Over time, it has evolved alongside the operation; reconfigured and improved as the airport has grown.

That’s the difference. A strong foundation, continuously improving.

Friction is always moving

It doesn’t appear all at once. It builds gradually, often in places that haven’t been revisited for a while: Check-in flows that once worked well. Key drop processes that made sense at the time. Collection points that now feel slower under pressure.

Nothing is broken. The operation has simply grown. Left alone, that friction builds until it starts to impact ops teams and passengers.

That’s why we’re working closely with airports like Bristol to extend our partnership and refine the platform in line with how the operation evolves.

  • Accelerating check-in with Online Check-In completed before arrival
  • Streamlining the key drop to create a faster, smoother handover
  • Automating key collection to eliminate friction at a critical journey touchpoint

Individually, these are small changes. Together, they remove friction points for ops teams and passengers. And they don’t get introduced all at once. Changes are rolled out gradually, in step with the operation, so teams can adapt and performance improves without disruption.

Why this approach is changing

Our five-year partnership with Bristol Airport isn’t just a contract. It reflects a different way of thinking. Not installing a system and moving on, but continuously improving it over time.

That only works when the technology is built to evolve. And when there’s a close partnership with the people using it every day.

Modern airport parking software is built for continuous improvement, not one-time deployment. That’s what it looks like to align your systems with how airports actually operate: constantly evolving, constantly growing.

A better question to ask

Most conversations still focus on what a system can do today.

A more useful question is: How will this system adapt as we grow?

Bristol’s decision to extend its partnership is a strong example of that thinking. It’s not a finish line but an ongoing commitment to improving how the operation works – year after year.

If your operation is growing, we’d love to talk.
